Draft Positive Ageing Plan 2017-2021

The population of older people in Subiaco is increasing and, as the community ages, the city recognises the importance of access to appropriate support and services for all.

In response to this, the city has developed a draft Positive Ageing Plan 2017-2021 (located in the document library). The plan has been guided by best practice models of local governments throughout Australia, insights into the city’s demographic profile and community consultation. Engagement methods used throughout consultation in 2016 included an in-depth community survey, stakeholder focus groups and a workshop with the city’s elected members.

The draft plan, which links to the city’s Community Strategic Plan, is a four year plan representing the city’s commitment to support the city’s ageing population. It also addresses key themes raised from consultation including; desire to participate and contribute, safety, health and wellbeing, transport and mobility, vibrancy and activity, infrastructure and communication.

The plan provides direction for how the city will address, in partnership, the challenges facing its ageing community with the aim of achieving the following outcomes;

  • A community of empowered seniors that focuses on building an inclusive environment using their own strengths and capabilities.
  • Provision of effective strategies to facilitate meaningful participation in the local community, to build social capital whereby community members will be involved and will take leadership in shaping their community.
  • Strengthened connections with seniors to foster increased community capacity where individuals are empowered to access informative services.
  • A council supportive of strong partnerships with local services
  • A whole-of-city approach to further developing an age friendly community
  • Best practice adoption of community development principles
  • Identification of the role of the city and other stakeholders
  • Identify resources focusing on economic sustainability.

The city is now seeking your comment via a short survey in review of the draft Positive Ageing Plan 2017-2021 to ensure it reflects the desires of the community.

Hard copy surveys are also available at the city’s administration building, Subiaco library, Lords Recreation Centre and Subiaco Community Centre. A print friendly version of the online survey can also be found in the document library on this project page.

Community consultation was open for a four week period and closed Tuesday 18 April 2017.
